Biotin is involved in energy production through the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It is also essential for the production of RNA and DNA and helps to maintain the mucous membranes, healthy skin and nails.

Good Food Sources include liver, kidney, egg yolk, pork, sunflower seeds, soya beans.

Deficiency can lead to hair loss, baldness (reversible), muscle pains and weakness, dry skin and depression.

Recommended intake is 50 mcg daily but varies depending on age and gender.

Tips;

  • Long term anticonvulsant medication use (epilepsy drugs) may cause deficiency.
